Does this work if I rent?
Yes, and three of the five slots are about the space you are in right now. Renting limits what you can change structurally, not whether a room can be calm, lit well, and unmistakably yours.
What goes in the "saving for the keys" slot?
The number and the date, over an image of the kind of place you mean. A deposit figure with a month attached reads as a plan; a photo of a dream kitchen on its own reads as a mood.
